A History of Caring for Indiana

Caregiver Companion began in February, 1995 when Sister Veronica Baumgartner, CSJ opened an office in Lafayette, Indiana.

Sister Veronica referred to those we help as “neighbor” a term based on the Congregation of St. Joseph’s commitment to the “dear neighbor”. Neighbor connotes a warm and caring concern and that is what Caregiver Companion does—carries a note of love and concern from volunteer to neighbor.

The initial funding for Caregiver Companion came from the Sisters of St. Joseph in Tipton, Indiana with support from St. Mary Cathedral in Lafayette, and donated office space from St. Ann’s Church in Lafayette.

With help from the community, Caregiver Companion grew and Sister Veronica hired full time help in 1999. An affiliate office was opened in Tipton in 2003.

In 2007 the Sisters of St. Joseph in Tipton joined with six other communities to form the Congregation of St. Jospeh.

The Congregation created the CSJ Ministries Corporation which oversees and supports all the ministries of the Congrergation. Through the encouragment of this organization Caregiver Companion now operates as its own 501©(3).

Our Logo

The letters of Caregiver and Companion are joined to indicate the close relationship that our volunteers form with the caregivers they serve. This relationship is one full of friendship, support, and practical service. The figures in the logo represent the volunteer, the caregiver, and the person for whom they care. The three people are connected by hearts, signifying the love that unites the three.

We know that service must be given in love to be of any real value. Because God is love, we acknowledge that it is God who joins the volunteer, caregiver, and neighbor as one. Color also has significance. Blue is a primary color, meaning it is a strong, basic color from which other colors can be created. The color represents how our strong presence with the families we serve can change lives for the better, and it often improves the quality of life for the entire family. The word “Companion” is in a lighter blue than “Caregiver” because our service is given, not to draw attention to ourselves but to focus our energy and work toward the relief of the caregiver.

CURRENT NEEDS:  Drivers are needed; if you like to drive please give us a call at 423-1879.  Springtime always finds us saying goodbye to our Purdue students who primarily help us with housework.  This leaves us extremely shorthanded during the summer months for our neighbors who need someone to run the sweeper or mop the kitchen floor.  Lawn Mowing and yardwork are another summertime need.  Please consider helping someone in this capacity, if you are able.  This is a great project for students and families on summer break who want or need some service learning hours.
